Project Context
Clarke Willmott had recently established a Transformation Function to unify change initiatives and strengthen PMO governance. With a focus on both large-scale transformation and micro-innovation, the firm recognised that while project management discipline was strong, there was a growing need to enhance change management skills to ensure new technologies and ways of working were fully adopted. Clarke Willmott engaged Nine Feet Tall to upskill their Project Managers in change management, helping them embed new practices and realise project benefits more effectively. Key challenges included aligning PMO and IT teams, ineffective communication channels, insufficient project scoping, lack of review of lessons learned, limited change preparation, and difficulties in stakeholder engagement and benefits realisation.
Project Delivery
Nine Feet Tall delivered a tailored one-day change capability workshop for Clarke Willmott’s project management team, introducing core change management principles and encouraging participants to relate concepts to their own projects through active discussion and an ongoing action log. The session addressed current challenges, including stakeholder communication and project handover, and was followed by a recommendations summary and action tracker. Additional materials included a summary pack and an introduction to a PMO maturity healthcheck, supporting ongoing development beyond the workshop.
Outcomes
The workshop revealed that while the team had a basic understanding of change management, they lacked confidence in applying it to their work. Notably, the most significant improvements were seen in stakeholder persona mapping and tailored communications, prompting leadership to continue these discussions to embed learning. The session also sparked valuable conversations about project scoping, adoption, and closure, encouraging the team to reflect on and improve their ways of working.
