And they call it puppy love….what we can learn from our four-legged friends

Lockdown seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally make our long-term dream of getting a puppy come true. However, after listening to a Radio 4 show on the perils of getting a dog during lockdown, I thought – what have I learnt from my little fluff ball?

Lottie is now a 4-month-old Cockapoo – full of energy and life. So, how can we be more dog?

  1. Embrace the unknown: Unknown waters can be scary – but sometimes you just have to run right through them!
  2. Be kind: You don’t have to bark the loudest to get what you want. Sometimes it’s the acts of love and kindness, like doggie cuddles, that mean you get the most treats.
  3. Create a routine: Designated play time is essential to leading a fulfilled life. Lottie is forever wanting to play but establishing set play times means that she has something to look forward to.
  4. Stand out: There is no such thing as being too cute. Walking along with Lottie, getting everyone’s attention, can be time consuming but it’s great to see everyone wanting to interact with her. Being a trailblazer, can be tiring, but it’s worth it in the long run – stand out from the crowd.
  5. Zzzzzz: Getting enough sleep is really, really important. Who knew that puppies sleep so much. Let’s find value in a bit of shut eye.
  6. Time out: It’s good to be left alone – sometimes! Learning the art of self-reflection is fundamentally important in maintaining stability throughout the day.
  7. Incentivise: Treats are life – if you want Lottie to do something – give her a yummy treat. Incentivising when trying to embed change is one of the keys to success.
  8. Don’t snap: People don’t like biters. Don’t snap to get what you want!
  9. Grab attention: If you feel like you’re getting ignored – wee on the carpet! Stand out from the crowd, but maybe not by doing your business on the floor!

Who knew having a puppy would be so educational, and could teach me so much about living a good, settled life. What else could be better than fresh air, play and sleep every day! Have a think about how you can bring these learnings into your workplace.
