NSPCC is the UK’s leading children’s charity. Between 2016 and 2021 they have helped to make 6.6 million children safer from abuse. Working across the whole of the UK the work that NSPCC does protects children today and prevents abuse tomorrow.

PMO and project, programme and portfolio governance

The NSPCC had implemented a new PMO during Covid to help them with their project, programme and portfolio governance across multiple departments. With an ambition to continually develop and grow the effectiveness of their PMO, the NSPCC approached Nine Feet Tall to help. Nine Feet Tall set out to assess their current PMO strength, and to feedback recommendations to the NSPCC team.

Project Delivery

Nine Feet Tall assessed the current setup and effectiveness of the NSPCC PMO. Through conducting 25 separate interviews across 5 stakeholder groups it was possible to gain insight into the effectiveness of their current setup as well as NSPCC’s aspirations for the future of the PMO. From the data collected, a clear 'as is' assessment was made, followed by a consolidated 'to be' future state assessment, creating the foundations for their 2023 PMO roadmap.

Working to their 12-day timeframe Nine Feet Tall analysed the insight gathered and delivered recommendations to build the PMO capabilities. Alongside these recommendations a roadmap was built, detailing key milestones within the next 12-month period to ensure delivery of the ‘to be’ state. These recommendations were shared amongst key stakeholders and agreed, alongside some additional aspirational recommendations which would span further than 12 months.


The NSPCC now had a clear and trackable set of recommendations and actions for their PMO in 2023. Their ambition to grow and develop their PMO effectiveness will be possible to achieve through good preparation and following their new PMO roadmap. Nine Feet Tall left NSPCC with the confidence and clarity to deliver their strategic portfolio effectively and on time.
